5 top tips for saving energy this winter!
As it gets colder and darker outside, you might find yourself using more energy in your home. For this reason, we've made a list of energy saving tips to help you reduce your energy bills this winter!
1. Adjust the temperature on your thermostat by a few degrees. Your thermostat will heat your home to the temperature you set it to and switch off automatically when it reaches it. You can use your radiators to dry your laundry as well instead of using a dryer. You can also set timers on your central heating, so your heating switches off if your house is empty.
2. Draught proof your windows and doors to contain the heat. Insulation is a good way of controlling this as it is an effective way of reducing heat loss. The best approach for insulation is to insulate your walls, floorboards and roof or loft space. Reduce heat loss by sealing air leaks in your pipes.
3. Turn your appliances off from the plug when you're not using them. Leaving your electrical appliances on standby can waste electricity therefore increasing your energy bills and switching them off at the plug can save electricity while still working properly the next time you switch them on.
4. Water usage - Energy is used to create hot water in your home and using it wisely can make a difference to your energy and water bills. Tips include take short showers rather than baths. Make sure that you fill your washing machine and dishwasher before using them. Use a washing up bowl to wash your dishes to reduce water usage.
5. Use LED lights or other energy efficient lights in your home. LED lights are bright while being energy efficient. This could specially make a difference when it comes to Christmas lights and you can lower your energy bills while making your home look and feel festive. LED Christmas lights are also cheaper than regular Christmas lights so this will help you save more money when you decorate your home. Turn your lights off when you are not using them or leaving a room to save more energy.
