Energy saving advice

  • Keeping your home warm!
    • Adjust temperature by a few degrees – this will still heat your home properly, but it will save energy.
    • Use timers on your central heating so heating switches off when your home is empty.
    • To keep your home warm with insulation, draught proof your windows and doors and make sure your pipes are properly sealed to prevent air leaks.
    • Help your radiators work better by gently bleeding out any trapped air.
    • When using your radiators in the cold weather, make sure they’re not always turned off as this can cause damp and mould to develop in a room.
    • Close your curtains or blinds at night to keep heat in and open them during the day to let the sun and heat from outside in.

Not all energy saving ideas are technically possible and you should ensure you have permission to make any alternations, if necessary.

  • Being mindful of your electricity usage!
    • Remember to turn off your appliances when you're not using them and only turn on the ones you need.
    • Use LED or other energy efficient lights to reduce your electricity bill while still lighting up your home.
    • Avoid using your tumble dryer in warm weather – hang your clothes to dry on racks inside your home or on a washing line.
    • Wash your clothes on a colder wash or an eco-wash – detergents are made so that they are just as effective on a colder wash as they are on a warmer wash.
    • Don’t leave the fridge or freezer door open for longer than needed as this can warm up everything inside it as the temperature increases.

  • Reducing your water usage!
    • When you can, choosing a quick shower over a bath is an easy, eco-friendly swap.
    • Fill your washing machine and dishwasher before using them as this can help you use them less.
    • Use a washing up bowl to wash your dishes – this can help save water and makes it easier.
    • Only fill the kettle with the amount of water you need. Measuring water in mugs rather than straight from the taps is an easy way to do this!
    • Make sure you don’t leave the tap running! Leaving the tap running while brushing your teeth for a couple of minutes can waste up to 15 litres of water – more than you ought to drink in a week!
